It was only when I was tasked with this write-up, did I realise that it has been 3 years since I’ve joined CSIT! Time really does fly around here but it helps that you’re kept busy with new tasks and challenges everyday and so you do not really feel the passage of time. My first job after graduating from the NUS Faculty of Engineering (Electrical) in 2002, I didn’t know what to expect. You know how they always say that what you’ve learnt in school ain’t gonna be applicable to what you do at work? Well, that’s NOT TRUE! At least not when you’re talking about an R&D Engineer who specialises in Communication Systems in CSIT.
As my job title suggests, I dabble in research and development of systems found in a communication chain. If you recall your digital communication lecturer flashing you this all-so-important block diagram of a typical digital communication system during his first lecture, you will know what I’m talking about. If not, you might like to brace yourself because that’s what my job revolves around – modems, codecs and the like! That’s not all, by the way. The job also entails evaluating current systems and developing your own software programs that offer customised solutions to our customers. So if you like to put what you’ve learnt in school to good use, this might just be the right job for you!
As CSIT positions itself at the forefront of technology and research, we constantly face the challenge of finding ways and means to equip ourselves with the necessary knowledge and skills. A typical day at work can involve delving into technology research, analysing current trends in communications, evaluating commercially produced solutions, software programming, churning out proposals and technical reports, and not forgetting having a good laugh with your colleagues during a “self-declared” tea-break!
While work can get rather hectic at times, the people around you make all the difference. I work with motivated individuals who have a genuine passion for their work and a fervent desire to make the workplace a fun and crazy place to be in. Politicking? Back stabbing? It’s quite a peace-loving community where I’m at (or perhaps I’m just an extremely peace-loving person?). Can’t imagine your colleagues actually helping one another out? But that’s just how it is in my department. Here, you’ll find people who are ever willing to guide you along and share their experiences when you get stuck with a problem. The bosses too are very supportive when it comes to matters not just concerning work, but also when it involves getting your leave approved! And nope, I’m not trying to sound politically correct just in case you’re wondering.
Finally, there are many non-work related activities that you can actively participate in over here at CSIT. Personally I was involved in organising the annual CSIT D&D and it was a fantastic experience. Not only did it present an opportunity to work with people from other departments, it was also a great way to get to know colleagues from departments other than your own. In fact, some of us became good friends as a result. So if you’re looking at drawing a fine balance between work and play, I strongly recommend that you join us as an R&D Engineer in Communication Systems! |
